EXPERIENCE LEARNING WITHÂ FERAL
Turning Interest Into Action
We began in 2004, with our first study abroad spring semester on Marine Science in India for undergraduate students from Juniata College, Huntingdon, Pennsylvania. Since then our program has expanded to include several courses for masters’ and PhD students as well as researchers, educators, technical and field personnel. We cover key concepts along with global challenges in the fields of environment, ecology and society with specific attention to the Indian context. Given the diversity and breadth of the topics covered, all courses involve field excursions to different parts of India where students have the opportunity to gain practical hands-on experience and knowledge on core aspects of each subject. We collaborate on all our courses with independent professionals and subject experts from Indian academic and research institutions, non-profit organisations and a few commercial establishments. Our goal is to offer students a unique academic experience and environment with a large emphasis on experiential learning and field observation based on a strong theoretical foundation.
OUR COURSESÂ AT A GLANCE
A Bit of Background
At FERAL, we strongly believe in action research backed by comprehensive empirical studies and high quality data evaluation. Most of our courses are therefore designed to provide a sound understanding of basic concepts and principles in the respective field while encouraging critical examination of real world challenges and solutions using quantitative research techniques. We offer these courses as short independent or collaborative training workshops focused on capacity building for professionals on specific aspects of remote sensing, GIS and statistical analysis using R. Our longer programs include 3 week courses and semesters for undergraduate students from the US and sometimes Indian colleges. These programs involve travel to various field sites in India where students interact with experts from collaborating institutions and gain practical experience by applying learned theories and methods in research papers and projects throughout the training period. Other regular courses taught by FERAL faculty include select M.Sc and PhD level courses at prestigious institutes such as the Wildlife Program at the National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS) and the Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment (ATREE), Bangalore.
